Spirit e-Newsletter | June 2008 | Krist Samaritan Center | Touching Lives, Healing Hearts
[Photo: children on the beach] Joyous July! Boy, it’s hot outside! The Krist Samaritan Center is here to help you cool off with a few family-friendly tips for your summer vacation. So sit back, relax, grab that glass of cold lemonade and catch this month’s Spirit.
Stop the Stress: Tips for a Happy Family Vacation | With summer in full force, it’s time for the whole family to get away for a relaxing, fun-filled family vacation! If only it was that easy. A vacation with family, while intended to give everyone a break and a bit of relaxation, can be a stressful event in itself. If all family members are dealing with their own stresses related to the different surroundings and lack of familiarity, the potential is heightened for conflicts among each other. Here are a few easy tips to ensure that your next family vacation is high on fun and low on stress. 1. Discuss amongst yourselves. Lack of communication is one factor that can increase vacation stress and worry. It's important to discuss the trip in advance and understand everyone's expectations in terms of activity versus quiet time and the degree to which your days are planned or scheduled in advance. 2. Lighten the load. If you are traveling with young children, it is important not to overload your schedule and to allow plenty of time for spontaneous activity. Location is not as important as the way your time is spent. "Kid-friendly" can be what you make it. 3. As you wish. Respect others' requests and be prepared to compromise. Everyone should have some opportunity to do things he/she wants. In most families, this means compromises on everyone's part. 4. Free to roam. Avoid a “whirlwind” tour or trying to see and do everything. Don't try to fill your days with too many commitments and activities. Leave time to see where your whims and moods take you. 5. Let it out. Communicate without being confrontational with other family members. Don't sulk and act resentful if it seems that nothing is "going your way." Kindly mention to the others that you're feeling disappointed that you haven't been able to see or do whatever it is you feel is important to you. 6. Relax and have fun. Don’t expect the very state of being on vacation to "cure" any difficulties or problems you may be facing back home.
