Celebrate National Mental Health Month | May is National Mental Health Month—and we’re celebrating you. As a patron of the Krist Samaritan Center, you’ve already taken the first step to discovering the means to mental wellness. With your help, we are spreading the word about mental health and how the Center serves a great purpose in our community—and we thank you. So sit back, relax and catch this month’s Spirit…you deserve it. [Photo]
Keeping an Eye on Mental Health | As a tribute to Mental Health Month, we’re offering up a few thought-provoking statistics about mental health issues and the impact they are having on our society. • Between 28 to 30 percent of the U.S. population has a mental health disorder, substance abuse disorder or both. • As many as 8 million Americans who have a serious mental illness do not receive adequate treatment each year. • People who receive treatment for depression are two-thirds less likely to miss work days due to illness. • Untreated and mistreated mental illness costs the U.S. about $105 billion in lost productivity each year. • Older men are far less likely to seek and receive treatment for depression than older women. • Only about 21 percent of children in the U.S. who need mental health services actually receive them. "Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of, but stigma and bias shame us all." –President Bill Clinton
