| Helping Individuals and Families on the Road to Recovery.
Hurricanes cause many problems beyond physical damage to homes, roads, businesses and the economy. Many people experience depression, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other mental-health issues from the disturbing event and subsequent loss.
Often, a storm or pending storm appeals to an individual’s psychological memory history causing anxiety and increasing stress levels. Depression is another common side-effect of natural disasters, and affects the way and individual thinks and feels both physically and emotionally. These issues are not only a problem for adults—children can also experience these issues, but may not be able express their feelings clearly.
Other problems caused by such a traumatic event include psychological issues of living with family or friends due to the storm, fighting with insurance companies, the loss of valued possessions, and more.
The Krist Samaritan Center for Counseling and Education continues to help people affected by Hurricane Ike. The first step toward recovery of mind, body and spirit is recognizing the issues and dealing with them appropriately. The Center’s clinicians are specially trained in counseling anyone dealing with PTSD, depression and other psychological issues related to Hurricane Ike.
