Implications of Stress

According a study published in a recent medical journal, stress is the most common cause of poor health in our society. In fact, it’s estimated that as many as 70% of all visits to a family practitioner are caused by stress. While a certain amount of stress is expected and normal, many of us are “overloaded” with excess stress, causing negative effects on our physical and emotional wellbeing.

Stress can be classified in two categories — external and internal. External stressors are things outside of your control, such as a death in the family. In contrast, internal stressors are those pressures we put on ourselves. A combination of increased external and internal stress can lead to a number of mental and emotional effects, including anxiety, cognitive impairment, panic attacks, psychosomatic illness and more.

In honor of Stress Awareness Month, below are a few ways to improve your mental health.
•	Decrease caffeine consumption
•	Exercise regularly
•	Perform meditation techniques
•	Stabilize sleep patterns
•	Engage in leisure activities

If left untreated, stress can also cause severe physical health problems, including heart disease, heart attacks, strokes and more. With more than one third of all Americans living with an unhealthy amount of stress, the severity of the issue is extremely prevalent in society. Bottom line — it’s important to be aware of your stress level and manage it, leading to a happier and healthier life, both mentally and physically.
